Dressing Up Walls with Wallpaper

Add some art to a room—without the frame.

Wallpaper is back (though did it ever really go away?), in everything from contemporary motifs to cottage-core florals. And we’re not talking your grandmother’s wallpaper, either.

Today’s designs are a fresh take on past colors and styles, with a wallpaper out there for every aesthetic.

Wall murals

Unlike most wallpaper designs, walls murals lack a repeating pattern. Instead, they depict a whole scene or a rolling series of images. Wall murals work best in a large, open space, like a dining or living room.

Biophilia

Communing with nature is easy to do when you add botanical patterns, such as florals or ferns, to a wall. And when it comes to bringing the outdoors in, you’ll find everything from bold designs that pop with color to more subdued hues.

Faux

Create the illusion of a unique material such as brick, stone, wood, venetian plaster and marble, or even a texture like grasscloth.

Retro

Turn back time with a classic Art Deco design of bold, geometric patterns in symmetrical arrangements. Or channel a 70s vibe with burnt oranges, tans and yellows. Whatever decade you’re yearning for, chances are you’ll be able to find a design you’ll love.

Ombre effect

If you desire color but don’t want an overpowering pattern, ombre-styled wallpaper may be the ticket. This type of wallpaper takes a color and gradually blends it from a lighter hue to a darker one, typically fading from top to bottom, for a gorgeous effect.

Oversized prints

Want to make an impact in a room? Consider wallpaper with a large-scale print. You can find oversized prints in everything from botanicals and geometric shapes to abstract art. Just keep in mind that you don’t want the wallpaper to overwhelm your space—so use the wallpaper as a focal point and design around it.
